your right matt. 1.30 in the morning after a shift at the guild probably isn't a good time to write on this sort of thing. I was trying to differentiate between the empty minded feeling when doing a technique and the relaxed muscles you need to move freely. I know that having a happy and relaxed atmosphere helps a lot. Sorry if i just confused people.

Something I've noticed recently is that I tend to confuse relaxation with a degree of complacency (particularly when I'm in a bad mood for whatever reason). I find that I expect techniques to work without me giving them any attention and con myself into thinking I'm relaxed, when in reality I'm probably more tense than normal!

I guess this ties in with what people have said about the mental and physical states being linked...

You are all too eager to hit people, slow it down go half speed learn the technique and then speed it up when you think you have it,as for the Uke's, relaxed does not mean limp fish, you have to find a balance between being too tense & too relaxed.Too much tension and you will get broken ,too relaxed means Tori will not be able to apply the technique, no learning will take place so thus negating why you are at training. Try & train with a certain amount of realism. To help with it think Kamae and intent .Strike through the tori this will help the tori to learn to move out of the way then when grappling have a small amount of tension so your arms just simply don't drop to your sides.
Sorry i have rambled a bit ,i hope my viewpoint helps at least one of you.Carl
