Trying to get the most from Training, or understanding the Dojo Married couple!!!!!
Remember Uke like a Good wife can make Tori (the Husband) look good if the following is applied.
UKE =Training partner who receives technique/Attacker
TORI= Training patner whom peforms the technique/Defender
In nearly all technique Uke makes the first move, and ends up on the floor, and Tori seems to be the one doing all the techniques, so is the only one learning,. This is not so, the role of Uke is very important, because most of our training depends upon one another, and without a good Uke, it is almost impossible to learn.
If one is to be a good Uke it is important to put the following in to practice.
Strike with intent, you have to strike properly, in order for Tori to learn effectively.
Uke should SLOWLY increase the level of his attack.
Uke should move with the effort of Tori's technique, not only to help Tori learn what is effective and what is not, but to also learn how a technique affects the person it would be used upon (Uke gets to feel it)
Know how the technique feels let the practioners learn how to apply a proper technique, and what the results will be. Oh and of course Uke learns how to applie correct Ukemi.

To be a bad Uke is far more simple, resist all techniques, until you force Tori to applie improper dynamics (or cause a great deal of pain).
Or attack half heartedly so that Tori does not have to move correctly, or attack so fast and so hard that tori can not deal with it.
Or even refuse to fall, because you do not want to get dirty, or just can not be botherd to get up of the floor each time, or because you do not want to break a sweat.
Remember it is down to you which kind of Uke you want to be, but remember which kind of Uke you would like to train with if you are Tori, and remember what goes around comes around.
Another important thing about being a good Uke is that if you ever get involved in a real fight situation, you must know how to deal with being beaten by a superior technique, being Uke you wil also know how a technique works on another person and that will be the key in helping you survive. Uke-ship also teaches you how things don't work too, where the holes in your balance, and the balance of others is. It teaches you distance, timing, rhythem of attack and range of attacks.
So in other words if you can survive long enough in the Dojo, you could survive on the street.
Remember Uke sometimes can learn more than Tori.

One of the Bujinkan Shihan said
Respond correctly with heart and body to you opponent's many changes, will take practice, this must be done correctly, gently and relaxed.
Some people may say that it is too soft, or too slow, but if you wish to learn correctly, with correct movement then nothing can be too soft, or too slow. Surely this is plain logic.
Until next time Gammbatta. Karle.
